(Barcelona, 1962)
Research professor at ICREA (Institut Català de Recerca i Estudis Avançats) and works at the Pompeu Fabra University, where he directs the Complex Systems Laboratory of the PRBB (Parc de Recerca Biomèdica de Barcelona). He has a degree in both Physics and Biology from the University of Barcelona, and a PhD in Physics from the UPC (Polytechnic University of Catalonia). He is also an external professor at the Santa Fe Institute (New Mexico, USA) and the Complexity Science Hub in Vienna. His research has received support from various entities in Europe and the United States, including the McDonell Foundation and ERC Advanced Grants.
One of his main research interests is understanding the origins and evolution of complexity and of natural and artificial systems, including the space of possible cognitions of what he calls "liquid brains." In recent years, it has promoted new research aimed at the "terraforming" of ecosystems in danger of collapse. It uses both mathematical models and experimental studies based on synthetic biology.
He participated in Medialab Madrid banquete08 with “The architecture of nature: complexity and fragility in ecological networks” together with José Manuel Montoya and Miguel Ángel Rodríguez. Also with “The large-scale organization of chemical reaction networks in astrophysics” together with Andreea Munteanu.
