(Ohio, 1950)
Multimedia artist, he is a founding member of the Ocean Earth organization whose objective is research into alternative energy sources and the geopolitical relationships established by dependence on raw materials. Fend builds imaginary cartographies from satellite images and suggests engineering projects to solve the climate crisis. In this way, it establishes an interrelation between art and science through an artistic project that escapes the conventional idea of art. In its maps, Fend creates projects for the use of the oceans as a source of renewable energy and raw materials, mainly based on giant algae. With this material (maps cut or remade from new approaches, machinery plans or engineering projects on a planetary scale) and accompanied by pedagogical texts, he proposes extracorporeal artistic exhibitions. Among the most notable: 1981 Baxter Art Museum; PS1, New York, 1982 The Kitchen, New York, 1984 Kunsthalle Berlin, 1985 National Gallery Berlin; Santa Barbara Museum, Santa Barbara, 1987 LACE, Los Angeles, 1988 documenta 8, Kassel, 1991 BBK, Munich; American Fine Arts, New York, 1993 Landesmuseum Joanneum, Graz; Biennale di Venezia, Venice; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Ludwig Forum, Aachen. 2002 Ars Electronica Festival, Linz. Within the Medialab Madrid project it has participated in the conference on science, art and activism.
