An unclassifiable artist, he has interchangeably explored performance, electronic music, visual arts and cinema. He has published ten music albums, including Big Science (1982), Mister Heartbreak (1984), Home of the Brave (1986), soundtrack to his film of the same name, Life On A String (2001) and Homeland (2010). . O Superman, a minimalist theme song with electronically modified vocals, marked the beginning of postmodern culture. He has composed the music for films by Wim Wenders and Jonathan Demme, choreographic works by Trisha Brown, Bill T. Jones and Molissa Fenley, and the performance piece Far Side of the Moon, by Robert Lepage. He has toured internationally with spoken word shows and complex multimedia performances, such as United States IV (1983), Empty Places (1990), The Nerve Bible (1995) and Songs and Stories from Moby Dick (1999), based on the novel by Herman Melville. His visual work has been the subject of individual and group exhibitions in the main European and North American museums. As a filmmaker, he has made the films Home of the Brave (1984) and Heart of a Dog (2005), among others, as well as a large number of videos. He has received distinctions and recognitions, such as the Honorary Legends Award from the Pratt Institute (2011), the Dorothy and Lilian Gish for an entire artistic career (2007), the Deutsche Schallplatten for the album Life On A String (2001) and numerous supports from the American National Endowment of Arts and the Guggenheim Foundation. She was the first artist to obtain a residency in 2002 at NASA for her constant research into technology.
