Art historian, exhibition curator and professor. He studied Art History, Cultural Sciences and Modern and Contemporary History in Münster (Westphalia, Germany). His doctorate was on the scream in 20th century German painting and graphics. Since 2004 he has been linked to the ZKM⎥Museum of Contemporary Art, where he has held various academic and curatorial functions. In 2010 he was appointed director of the ZKM Museum of New Art. In 2016 he was appointed director of the Ludwig Forum for International Art in Aachen. In 2019 he took over the management of the Wolfsburg House. He is a professor of Art History at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe. He has conceived and held numerous exhibitions as a curator, published numerous academic articles and edited various publications. He is a member of numerous art juries and academic advisory boards (among others Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), RWE Stiftung, Volkswagen Foundation). In 2017 he received the Justus Beer Curator Award, and the exhibition he curated, “Flashes of the Future: The Art of the 68ers or The Power of the Powerless,” was named exhibition of the year by the AICA Critics Association.
