He has a degree in Fundamental Physics (1986) and a doctorate in Computer Science and Digital Communication (2005). Senior researcher at the Musical Technology Group at the Pompeu Fabra University of Barcelona, where he directs the Music & Advanced Interaction (MAIn) team, and associate professor at the same university, where he obtained his tenured position in 2011. He teaches Music courses by Computer, Audio Signal Processing, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Interactive Media.
During his university years in the 1980s, he discovered computer programming and decided to dedicate himself fully to live computer music. Throughout the 1990s he conceived and developed award-winning interactive installations and multimedia performances, in collaboration with internationally renowned Catalan artists such as Marcel·lí Antúnez or La Fura dels Baus.
Back in academia since the late 1990s, his main current research interests focus on the confluence of HCI and tangible and musical interaction, on the application of novel interactive techniques in education and on communication possibilities augmented using tabletops and brain-computer interfaces. He is the author of more than 20 journal articles and book chapters, more than 50 peer-reviewed conference articles, and has given more than 20 invited presentations and keynote talks. He has participated in more than 30 international scientific committees, in 3 of them as program chair, having recently been co-chair of the TEI'13 conference, the 7th International Conference on Tangible, Embedded and Embodied Interaction. He is also a member of the steering committee of Tangible and Embedded Interaction (TEI).
He has received several international awards, including the Ciutat de Barcelona (1999 and 2007) and the prestigious Prix Ars Electronica Golden Nica (2008). He has participated in 6 projects funded by both the EC and the Spanish government (in 2 of them as PI). He is currently best known as one of the inventors of the Reactable, a tabletop musical instrument that achieved great popularity after joining Icelandic artist Bjork's Volta world tour in 2007-08, and since 2009 he has been one of the group's founding partners. spin-out of the Reactable Systems company.
