Artist and programmer. He finished his studies in Cultural Studies at the Humboldt University of Berlin. Since 1994 he has lived in Berlin and resides intermittently in Bombay, Bangalore and New Delhi. From 2000 to 2007 he was a professor at the Wissenschaftsakademie in Berlin. He has published in E-flux, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Junge Welt, Jungle World, Starship, Subtropen, Süddeutsche Zeitung, and Taz. He is co-founder of Bootlab (2000–2007), Pirate Cinema Berlin (2004–2007), 0xDB (2007), Pad.ma, and Indiancine.ma. He worked as a curator on The Oil of the 21st Century (2007) and Dictionary of War (2006–2007). He has participated in international exhibitions such as Manifesta, Zurich/Switzerland (2008), Gwangju Biennale, South Korea (2008), Taipei Biennale, China (2008), Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven/Netherlands (2006), Werkleitz Biennale, Halle (Saale)/ Germany (2004), Kunstwerke (2003), PS1 at MoMa New York City, NY/USA (2002), and ZKM, Karlsruhe/Germany (2000). His current projects include the video archives ad.ma and Indiancine.ma, an anthology of texts by Pirate Cinema Berlin on cinema and copyright and a film on financial capitalism recorded between 2003 and 2013 in Dubai. In 1991 he was awarded the Deutsche Jugendfotopreis and received the honorable mention and was nominated for the Software Award at Transmediale, Berlin 2003/2004.
He participated in Madialab Madrid banquete05 within the workshop “Take the reins!” (March 11 to 15, 2002). This workshop was designed to learn how to develop one's own technological infrastructure, such as building an Internet platform using open source free software programs and technologies, such as the Linux operating system. Participating were groups of artists who have been developing, or helping to develop, autonomous platforms for artist collectives since the early 1990s.
