Almost twenty years ago, the SASETRU Factory closed its doors, leaving more than 5,000 workers on the streets. In January 2003, unemployed workers organized in the Polo Obrero and the Interbarrial of Avellaneda, together with former plant workers, occupied the abandoned plant to put it back into operation.
The State and the employers did not wait for their response to this audacity of the picketers. On March 25, they deployed an impressive police operation of almost 1,000 troops to evacuate the factory. After 12 hours of heroic resistance broadcast live on television, repression broke out and the workers were evicted. They evicted but did not break the workers' determination to fight. “We return to Sasetru… or we return” was the phrase that led an incessant national and international campaign, with events and mobilizations, which 4 months later forces the Legislature of the Buenos Aires police to discuss a bill for the expropriation of the property and the machinery. Finally, in July 2003, in La Plata and before an impressive mobilization, the temporary expropriation of SASETRU was voted. An impressive VICTORIA PIQUETERA.
