(Karlsruhe, Germany, 1950)
Artist and researcher in the field of virtual art, she examines the intersection between art, technology and science. He trained in fine arts and theater at the Hochshule der Künste in Berlin. In 1988, together with Wolfang Strauss, he founded the first Research and Development Center for Virtual Reality applied to the world of design, architecture and urban planning, called ART+COM in Germany. In their artistic research they explore the concept of Mixed Reality, connecting the physical world with the virtual one. At the same time, they examine the problems of the perception and identity of digital media in culture, critically accompanying the digitalization process. Its interactive installations are poetic tools for discovering virtual spaces, populated with data that aim to stimulate learning and thinking. In "Home of the Brain" (1990), the artists not only reflect on the new medium, but the discourse itself is shown as a philosophical debate in a virtual exhibition. In "Liquid Views" (1992), the sense of touch becomes an extended interface that connects the physical world with the virtual one in which the phenomenon of a mixed reality world is created with the tip of a finger. With Netzspannung.org (1998), they started one of the first online educational platforms and archives for media art and digital culture. The data is analyzed semantically and thus put into context. "Energy_Passages" (2004) works with daily news as the mental energy that shapes a city. They form the invisible information architecture of the city, which is "measured" and made fluidly visible in public space. She has been honored with numerous awards, among others: in 1992, together with Wolfgang Strauss, she received the Golden Nica from the Prix Ars Electronica in Linz, Austria for Home of the Brain (1990/1992), the first Virtual Reality artistic installation. She received the 2018 ACM SIGGRAPH Distinguished Artist Award for lifetime achievement in digital art and was elected to the SIGGRAPH Academy as a research artist who has contributed to the field of interactive media art from the 1980s to the present.
He participated in the Medialabmadrid exhibition cycle Info-Jukebox: make your choice (2003), a virtual system with which you could access the works of Interface Design and Interactive Art developed at MARS (Media Arts and Research Studies), directed by Monika Fleischmann and Wolfgang Strauss.
