(Caracas, 1957)
Architect, artist and researcher at the University of Austin, Texas, he addresses the spatial possibilities offered by new digital technologies, algorithmic compositions and music. He theorizes about “hypersurfaces,” where the invisible mixes in a hybrid way with the virtual. It has shaped notions such as liquid architecture, a dematerialized architecture based on the construction of artificial environments based on new technologies. It is a flexible project tool whose form is contingent on the user's interest. It uses algorithmic techniques to design real, virtual and hybrid intelligent environments and has designed numerous prototypes, laboratories and real facilities that remain liquid architectures, with mechanical resources, giving the impression of being between the physical world and the virtual world. He has developed his teaching work at several universities, such as the Ohio State University in Columbus OH, UCLA Los Angeles CA, University of Texas, Austin TX, University of Wales UK, Art Center College of Art and Design, Pasadena CA. He is currently a professor in the Department of Architecture and Urban Design at UCLA, is the founding director of the Immersive Virtual Environments Laboratory and the Advanced Design Research Program at the School of Architecture at the University of Texas at Austin, and a member of the Network technology world. Some of his most notable projects are: Turbulent Topologies, Palazzetto Tito, Venezia (Italy), 2008, Web-Event Trans-ports (with K. Oosterhuis and O. Bouman) NAi (Netherlands Architecture Institute), Rotterdam (Olanda), 2000 , Archilab, Frac Centre, Orléans (France), 2000 Invisible Architectures, Venezia (Italy), 2000 Continuum 001, Center for Contemporary Arts, Glasgow (Scozia), 2000 Stand der Dinge/ Virtuelle Entwicklungen, Künstlerhaus, Vienna (Austria), 1999 , Brasmitte: Interventions in Megacities, SESC Belenzinho Sao Paulo (Brazile), 1999 Transarchitectures 02-03, sedi varie, tra cui NAi (Netherlands Architecture Institute), Rotterdam (Olanda); Institute Francaise d'Architecture, Parigi (France); Center de Design de l'UQAM University of Quebec Montreal (Canada); 1997-1998, Variable Data Forms, 1999, Paracube, 1998, Data-Driven Forms, 1997, Dancing With The Virtual Dervish: Worlds in Progress, Banff Centre, Alberta (Canada), 1991-1994.
He participated in the exhibition Hybrid spaces: virtual architectures with the work Transterraform, a liquid poetics of space, kinetic architectures generated by software.
