Doctor in Physics from the Complutense University of Madrid, specialized in the fields of Theoretical Quantum Optics, Quantum Information and Degenerated Quantum Gases. He is currently Director of the Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics in Garching (Germany), as well as Honorary Professor at the Technical University of Munich.
Member of the Max Planck Society and of the Leopoldina, National Academy of Naturalists of Germany, Fellow of the American Physical Society and Corresponding Academic of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and the Royal Academy of Sciences and Arts of Barcelona. He has been awarded numerous awards, including the Benjamin Franklin Medal, the Prince of Asturias Award for Scientific and Technical Research, the Blas Cabrera National Research Award, the BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge and Culture Award in Basic Sciences, the Quantum Electronics Prize of the European Science Foundation, the Franklin Medal in Physics, the Medal of the Royal Spanish Society of Physics, the Felix Kuschenitz Preis of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, the Medal of Honor of the Niels Bohr Institute, the Wolf Prize in Physics, the Hamburg Prize for Theoretical Physics, the Max Planck Medal of the Physical Society of Germany, the John Stuart Bell Prize, and the Quantum Computing Prize of the Micius Foundation of China. He is an Honoris Causa Doctor from the Universities of Castilla-La Mancha, Polytechnic of Catalunya, Zaragoza, Valencia, Polytechnic of Valencia, European University of Madrid, and Buenos Aires. He is a member of the Advisory Board of the IIIS (Tsinghua University, China), of the Research Expert Advisory Council of the "La Caixa" Banking Foundation (Spain), of the Scientific Council of the BBVA Foundation (Spain), and of the Board of Directors of Telefónica , SA (Spain).
Founding editor of the international journal Quantum Information and Computation, and associate editor of several international and national publications. He is the author of more than 400 scientific works published in the most important international journals in his specialty.
