(Dublin, Ireland, 1947)
Irish lawyer and political scientist, considered in the academic field as a sociologist and philosopher of autonomous Marxism. However, he has never defined himself as a sociologist, nor as a philosopher, nor as a historian, nor strictly as an autonomist. He has considered his theory, not as a component of an academic discipline, but as contributions to the "theory of social change" that for him is largely constituted by Marxism. He has developed his thoughts in close proximity to Zapatismo in Mexico, where he has lived since 1991. He has a doctorate in political science from the University of Edinburgh and a diploma in higher European studies from the College d'Europe. Since 1972 he has been a professor in the Department of Politics at the University of Edinburgh and, currently, a professor at the Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences at the Autonomous University of Puebla, Mexico.
