(Murcia, 1937)
Pioneer of conceptual art in Spain. He studied Architecture and Fine Arts in Madrid, although he did not complete his studies. His work has been characterized by breaking with the most conventional schemes of art. Oblivious to trends, his work focuses on the creation of situations, interventions, actions or projects, beyond the artistic object, which reflect his committed attitude and distance from the commercial aspects of art.
He began his artistic work from painting, influenced by informalism, his only exhibition within this trend being the one held in 1962 at the Lorca gallery in Madrid. Later, his work was framed in objective, rational and constructivist art. In 1967, he was selected for the First Salon of Constructivist Art. A year later, in 1968, after a stay in New York, his work was influenced by minimalism. From a stage that he himself called “habitable painting”, he evolved towards the construction of places through “environments” and “performances”. Starting in 1972, his works are developed mainly in urban spaces and his intervention in large dimensional spaces.
In 2007 he received the National Prize for Plastic Arts of Spain and in 2015 the Velázquez Prize.
