Writer and journalist, in his texts narration and essay, poetry and chronicle come together. An author committed to the reality of the Latin American people, in his work he delves into the roots of the continent's political and social conflicts. In 1960 he began his journalistic career as editor of Marcha magazine. After the 1973 coup d'état against Allende, he suffered persecution and had to go into exile to Argentina, where he founded the cultural magazine Crisis and published "The Open Veins of Latin America." In 1976 he was added to the list of those condemned by the squad of the Videla's death so he had to leave again, this time to Spain, where he wrote the trilogy "Memory of Fire." In 1985, he returned to Montevideo and founded the Brecha seminar with Mario Benedetti, Hugo Alfaro and other journalists and writers. In his narrative work, the short novel "The Following Days" (1963), the stories contained in "Vagamundo" (1973) and "The Book of Hugs" (1989) stand out. He was awarded an Honoris Causa Doctorate from the University of La. Havana, the University of Buenos Aires and the University of Guadalajara, Mexico. He has been awarded numerous awards, including the Casa de las Américas Award (1975 and 1978), the Uruguayan Ministry of Culture Award (1982, 1984 and 1986). , American Book Award (1989), Stig Dagerman Award (2010) and the Alba Literature Award (2013).
