Graduated in Law from the University of Zaragoza and Master in Business Administration from Columbia University (New York) in 1970. He was General Director of the Capital Markets area at Banco Urquijo in Madrid between 1970 and 1985. Later he was President- Founder of the company Beta Capital, a position that from 1991 he combined with the presidency of the Spanish Institute of Financial Analysts. He was also a member of the Board of Directors and the Permanent Commission of the Madrid Stock Exchange. In 1996 he became President of Tabacalera, SA, a position from which he promoted and favored the cross-border merger with the French company Seita. As a result of this merger, Altadis was born, a company that he presided over until July 2000. He was president of Telefónica SA from July 2000 to 2016.
