Plastic artist and pioneer of media art and conceptual art in Spain. His work, of a multidisciplinary nature, analyzes social institutions, the power mechanisms that sustain them and the influence they exert on the creation of the collective imagination. He is interested in topics such as censorship, the media, public and private spheres, and the role of art as a contemporary phenomenon. Their projects are presented with diverse media: photography, video, internet, publications and urban interventions. His multimedia work and installations investigate how information channels are used to promote or censor ideas.
Muntadas has taught courses and seminars at renowned institutions in Europe and America, such as the University of California in San Diego, the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Artes in Paris, the San Francisco Art Institute, the University of Buenos Aires and the MIT of Cambridge in Massachusetts. He has been awarded numerous times: by the Rockefeller Foundation (1980), the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation (1984) and the Center national des arts plastics de France (1990). He also won the National Prize for Plastic Arts from the Generalitat of Catalonia (1996) and the National Prize for Plastic Arts of Spain (2005).
