(Seville, 1959)
Computational biologist, he is a professor at the Catalan Institution for Research and Advanced Studies (ICREA) and director of the Life Sciences department at the National Supercomputing Center of Barcelona and the National Institute of Bioinformatics (INB-ISCIII). From 2015 to 2018, he was president of the International Society for Computational Biology. He was Vice-rector for basic research at the National Cancer Research Center (CNIO) and Director of the Structural Biology and Bioinformatics Program. He is a member of the European Organization for Molecular Biology and founder of the Science and Art initiative “e-biolab” and “estudioSymbiotic”. Pioneer scientist in the application of machine learning and artificial intelligence to personalized medicine, his research focuses on the analysis of genomic big data, especially protein interaction networks applied to (epi) Genomics, Cancer Biology and Precision Medicine, has developed computational tools such as the Text Mining methodology applied to biomedical problems. Its protein design research group guides its efforts to solve key biological problems through the development of new methods and computational resources useful for biologists, prediction of functional characteristics of proteins derived from the analysis of families and structures and in the area of extraction of information from biological texts, the development of methods and in the development of a new widely used open system (iHOP). Likewise, it collaborates in educational and interactive projects that enhance ACTS (Art-Science_Technology_Society) interaction, such as the GNOM project for the exploration of genetic networks, transdisciplinary research in digital and physical interfaces for visualization, exploration and experimentation with genetic networks.
