Doctor, professor and neurologist. Doctor in medicine. He traveled to Paris (Hôpital des Enfants Malades) and the United States, where he specialized in Pediatrics and Neurology, from 1950 to 1960 and obtaining a Master's Degree in Neuropathology. He taught at the Universities of Georgetown and Maryland (United States) and in 1960 he returned to Madrid to the Chair of Medical Pathology (Professor Dr. Vicente Gilsanz) at the Clinical Hospital of the Complutense University, where he began assisting and teaching in Neurology. In 1973 he was appointed, by merit-based competition, head of the Neurology Service at the Doce de Octubre Hospital in Madrid. In 1996 he obtained the first chair of Neurology created at the Complutense University and since 1999 he has been Professor Emeritus of the same.
President of the National Commission of Neurology and Vice President of the World Federation of Neurology (New Delhi, India, 1989-1993). Only foreign member of the Foundation for the Study of the Brain of the United States (Decade of the Brain, 1990-2000) President of the Neurology Education Committee of the European Union. Member of the WHO Expert Committee and founder of the Alzheimer Society-Spain. Full academician (1993) of the Royal Academy of Doctors and Correspondent of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando. Director of the "El Escorial Summer Courses" (1999-2002) of the General Foundation of the UCM. In 1999 he obtained the Grand Cross of the Civil Order of Health, the Gold Medal of the City of Zaragoza, and was a Knight of the Legion of Honor. In 2000 he was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine in London; Gold Medal from Queen Isabel of Portugal and Gold Medal from the General Council of Aragon. Honorary Member of the American Neurological Association (1999) and the United States Academy of Neurology.
