Musician, diplomat and poet. Before finishing his law studies, he published his first book of poems, "O Caminho para a Distancia", which opened the doors to fame for him. He traveled to England, studied English Literature at Oxford and later entered diplomatic life, serving in the United States, France and Uruguay. In 1956 he wrote the play "Orfeu da Conceição" made into a film under the title "Orfeo Negro", winner of the Palme d'Or at Cannes in 1958 and the Oscar in 1959. “New Poems II" published in the 1950s. The eighties, contains his best poems. In contrast to his solid education, he led a bohemian life for years that earned him expulsion from the diplomatic service.
