However, he has never defined himself as a sociologist, nor as a philosopher, nor as a historian, nor strictly as an autonomist. He has considered his theory, not as a component of an academic discipline, but as contributions to the &quot;theory of social change&quot; that for him is largely constituted by Marxism. He has developed his thoughts in close proximity to Zapatismo in Mexico, where he has lived since 1991. He has a doctorate in political science from the University of Edinburgh and a diploma in higher European studies from the College d&#039;Europe.
