In the mid-seventies, she began her artistic activity within the framework of Spanish conceptual art, where she positioned herself as one of the pioneering artists of experimental cinema and audiovisual art. Balcells develops his work through the production of videos, films, installations, performances, murals and video scores. In her early works she reflects on contemporary consumer society and the effects of the media on mass culture and gender stereotypes. Later he immersed himself in the exploration of human perception with works such as the video Color fields, presented at the I National Video Festival at the C\u00edrculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid (1984) and Tv weave, presented at the Institute for Art and Urban Resources , PS1, New York (1985) or as Frequencies, which revolves around color as an element that distinguishes - allows and delimits at the same time - perception. The poetic character of the work is based on the meeting point between science and the arts, always so fragile and so powerful. The reflection around light has structured his creative and teaching research, as in the installation Jard\u00ed de llum \u2013 Collserola (2003) or Light Years (2012). He is also fascinated by everyday objects and their symbolic essence. The exhibition En el cor de les coses is composed of five audiovisual installations that correspond to the essential spaces of a house. In 2010 he was awarded the 2009 Medal of Merit in Fine Arts in the Gold category.
