A first international exhibition and symposium of art, science and technology (Cibervisión 02_dinamicas fluidas) generated such a movement and impact at the Conde Duque Cultural Center in early 2002 that the question of opening a space and a permanent program structure was immediately raised. . Thus began the activities of MediaLab Madrid, initially conceived as a small laboratory open to the production, research, training and exhibitions of art and science related to new computer and telecommunications technologies, of a markedly transdisciplinary nature.

The ACTS+S intersection

One of the main objectives of the MediaLab Madrid program is to offer citizens the possibility of taking a look at the new scenarios that arise from the intersection between artistic creation, scientific research, technological advances and the new social dynamics of the communication. With this, the activities of MediaLab Madrid They headed towards the so-called Third Culture that integrates the humanist and the scientific, betting on dialogue and the free circulation of experiences and knowledge. We can no longer understand culture only as plastic creation, music, theater, literature or thought. Science and technology are also culture. Both have an unquestionable role in the way we conceive, perceive and relate to the world around us; They influence our habits and customs. Science, like art, although in different ways, is trying to make the invisible visible. It is trying to generate different models of cognition and understanding, different ways of understanding the patterns and processes that govern life in general and contemporary experience in particular.

The engines of cultural production

Who would conceive scientific innovations without technological advances? And who would talk about contemporary art today without the new audiovisual technologies of video, the computer or the Internet? The interaction between our imagination and communication technologies constitute one of the engines of cultural production; of an evolution that has taken us from the stone age to the age of silicon (which is basically still very refined sand) and information.

Si el movimiento genera espacio y estructura -tal y como plantea el físico norteamericano William Day- obtendríamos una explicación muy sencilla y razonable para entender la evolución de MediaLab Madrid.
